For the record...in WoW, you have unlimited possible skill slots: you fight almost all abilites your class can use. Not citing that as an advantage over Guild Wars: They are different systems.

Obvious ret-con. It makes no sense. It's based of of MtG's seven cards in a hand...I don't think there's any justification for that anyways.

Why stop at 10 slots?
Let's make the slots unlimited, and allow for player created mods and complex macros, also, while we are at it: let's petition ANet to release an expansion; we can call it, "The Burning Crusades".

It'll throw the whole game mechanics out of whack. The amount of time that went into balancing these skills constantly, will increase exponentially with every skill slot added. Delaying even more need-to-fix bugs in the future.

Why would you want to have 10? I have enough problems deciding on 8 skills to bring. Too many decisions for me, by the time I selected 10 skills, it would be time to log off. (humor)
Seriously, this will never happen. While ANet has fudged the published lore before, enlarging the skill bar would change the entire game and enrage a large part of the player community.

That was what I was thinking as well. Max out illusion, then drop your second elite slot into something really out there, like obsidian flesh? Searing Flames with 16 illusion, 12 fast cast, and signet of illusions handy?
Glyph of Renewal would pair nicely with some other elite spells with long recharges, as would Echo. Echo-sandstorm might just be nasty enough to run as a FoTM...
And 10 slots? Assassins could run full attack chains and still have room for some defensive stuff. Shadow Form/Obsidian Flesh assassins, hooray!
OK, that last one really DID scare me. Shadow Form assassins are already pretty nice, without giving them another elite and another non-elite slot to play with...

You know, while the game has had an 8-skill bar for a while now, elites came late in development. The primary purpose of elites was to cut down on abusive skill combos that Anet couldn't find any other way around without nerfing said skills to complete uselessness outside the combo. The entire purpose of elites is that you can't combine them together!
Going to a 10-skill bar has much, much less of a dramatic impact on balance issues than 2 elites on even an 8-skill bar.
